This month we have nominated Chantel for Nurse of the Month in August 2022!
Congratulations Chantel and thank you for your dedication to VNS! Read about Chantel's advice for nurses looking to get into agency work:
What do you love most about working with VNS?
I love the support and encouragement I get from the team. I love the excellent communication and overall friendliness and respect.
Also, I really believe it's important to have a flexible work-life balance. That's why people become so stressed, and work becomes the object of terror rather than joy. That's why I chose to do agency work so I can organise my schedule accordingly.
VNS have always been organised and professional, which helps keep things balanced, and in turn helps me to have that great work life balance I'm seeking. Really, shout out to the team who are amazing.
What is your nursing specialty and what facilities/locations do you usually work at?
I am a "jack of all trades" nurse. I have experience in different fields of nursing such as team leader work or social worker projects, immunisation,
Covid testing, Sexual health, Mental health, and Aged care.
I also work in both public and private hospitals, specialising in oncology, general med, surgical, palliative and so on. I never know what ward I'll be going to, which keeps things exciting and fun. It also gives me the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. I think if I was to pick a skill that I have in nursing it would be not being afraid to be thrown in the deep end.
Describe a rewarding experience you’ve had whilst working with VNS?
It's so hard to answer this question. There isn't just one particular thing that stands out to me. I have a few heart-felt stories but really a short paragraph would not do the story justice. I love being a nurse that's for sure, and it fits in my personal life and is part of my personality. I'm a very spiritual person and try to see the physical in the same way. 'What you put out you get back.'
What advice would you give to other nurses looking for an agency role?
Make sure you have a work-life balance. This is the best advice I can give. Nursing can be very stressful, but it's all about your mindset. Being in a humble and servicing position requires more strength and courage than anyone can imagine. I go to the Church of God (World mission society) and we are taught certain values that I apply to my life and work. For example, "Work with a mind of a master" or "It's better to give than to receive." So, I really believe if you do this, everything will always go well and smooth for you. Be positive always.
Thanks Chantel, and we look forward to having another great year with you at VNS.
