Street Art
Melbourne’s laneways and hidden alleys feature some incredible street art well worth exploring. Switch out your nursing clogs for your walking shoes and hit the pavement with your camera in hand. Check out some of the best murals in the city including Caledonian Lane, Hosier Lane, ACDC Lane and Union Lane. Finding these streets can be tricky so using an app and/or websites such as Detour or Adventure Clues will help you discover the hidden artistic treasures around the city.
Botanical Gardens
If you’ve just worked a long shift inside, do yourself a favour and head out to The Royal Botanical Gardens. You’ll find gorgeous trees, colourful plants, tranquil lakes, great city views and plenty of chairs and grassy open spaces to just stop and ponder. It’s open daily from 7.30 am ‘til sunset and is free to explore.
In the summer months, you’ll also find the
Moonlight Outdoor Cinema where you can watch your favourite films on a barmy night whilst nibbling on tasty snacks from the food trucks on site.
Delicious Food
Getting a little over the hospital sandwiches? Well, you are in for a treat. Melbourne is known for its wide, delicious array of international food options available at any time of day. If you’ve just finished a PM shift and feel like a Chicken Parmigiana and chips, there is no doubt you’ll be able to find it!
Here are some of the area’s worth visiting around Melbourne when you feel your tummy rumbling;
St Kilda Foreshore
If you love the beach and relaxed seaside vibes, visiting St Kilda Esplanade is a must. You can have a hit of volleyball with your nurse mates, hire some roller blades, sip on a cool beverage while enjoying the sunset and you may even see the odd penguin or two. In St Kilda, you’ll also find the famous colourful beach huts, delicious cakes on Acland street, live music and plenty of young people, as this is where a lot of the backpacker’s accommodation can be found.
If you’re staying in the city and want to explore St Kilda but don’t have a car, take advantage of the free city trams. These will take you right into the heart of where you want to be.
Live Music and Performances
If you’ve ever thought the live music scene is extinct, think again! Melbourne is bursting with venues calling your name for a dance. Venues like the Northcote Social Club, The Leadbeater Hotel, Cherry Bar and The Esplanade Hotel (The Espy) are top recommendations.
If the theatre is where your passion lies though, do yourself a favour and visit the Regent Theatre on Collins Street. It’s simply breathtaking.
Museums and Galleries
If you need a cultural fix, you’re spoilt for choice. Though not an exclusive list, these museums and galleries will keep you very busy outside of work hours.
Shopping
If you’re in need of some retail therapy, Chapel Street, the Bourke Street Mall, High Street Armadale and Melbourne Central will keep you satisfied. If you want to venture out of the city and explore the famous Chadstone Shopping Centre, better known as the Fashion Capital, it’s just off the freeway and will take about 25 minutes from Melbourne CBD.
Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
The MCG is one of the world’s most famous sporting grounds. At capacity, “the G” holds around 100,000 people and the atmosphere is electric at most sporting events. Though the name suggests it’s just for cricket, this is untrue. The Australian Rules Football (AFL) is also played here and is a must-do experience if coming to Melbourne. The MCG also runs tours which come with tickets to their museum - highly recommended.
Out of the city attractions/day trips
As agency nursing gives you the freedom to choose when and where you’d like to work, why not embrace it and get out of the city for a day or three? There are plenty of options around either side of the bay and into the country for you to explore. Here are a few spots worthy of a visit;
